More than 50 teams participated in Izhevsk Championship for Intellectual Games

The second tour of the Third Open Championship of Izevsk for Intellectual Games among schoolchildren took place on November, 11. More than 50 teams gathered in order to show their erudition, reading and quick wits.

More than three dozens of Izhevsk schools have sent their pupils to this championship”, says Olga Nechayeva, president of Izhevsk club “What? Where? When?”, the arranger of the tournament. –“Thanks to sponsorship of “Russneft” kids from Karakulino, Kambarka, Tchaikovsky could arrive as well. Each year intellectual games consolidate more and more children. And we are glad to see that.”

Schoolchildren from Karakulino are not novices here – it is for the third time that they participate in the Championship. But for the kids from Kambarka it is their first time. “Belkamneft” sponsored expansion of the geography of the tournament. First the general sponsor of the Championship helped the representatives of Izhevsk Club of Intellectual games to visit remote districts. After selective tours the winners came to Izhevsk. And it was also thanks to financial help of the oilmen. In this tournament the played on equal terms with the children from the capital. The second tour included two round, 12 questions each. To answer them each team had only one minute. But if you know the answer, you don’t need more!

During the break the participants enjoyed ice-cream supplied by “Udmurt Cold-store Complex”. And the jury considered the protests of some teams whose  answers  were not scored up. The intensity of emotions didn’t  get down even in the end of the tournament. The leader, the team from school No 29 “Buratino-Making Factory” could not answer the last question and let “Bomb”, the team from school No 30 catch up with it. And after that the jury found out that the there are five candidates for the third place! So, according to the rules, the teams had to undergo a quiz of additional questions. Finally the prize from the general sponsor of the Championship – books – was awarded to “Bomb”. “Buratino-Makers” took the second place, and “Granny-Guesser” from school No 41 was the third. The third tour will  be held on December, 9. The best six intellectuals will go to the Championship of Russia “What? Where? When?” this spring.

The prize for the best wrong answer was also handed to the winner in this nomination.
According to the tradition Izhevsk club awards the prize for the best wrong answer. This time it was won by “Extreme” – the team of school No 34. The question was: “What projects have been denied consideration at the French Academy of Science since 1775?”  The quick-witted kids answered: “ Wage increase initiatives”. (The right answer is – perpetuum mobile projects).
