On the 15th of may the largest book depositary of the Republic – the National Library – celebrated its 90th jubilee. During these years thousands of specialists received education with the help of “Lenin’s library” – that’s what the people of Izhevsk affectionately call the library. The National Library was founded in 1918 and the best books were selected from all the city of Izhevsk for its fund. Originally the library counted just about 20 thousand of books, magazines and newspapers. Now the figure is much more impressive – 1.5 million. The library is keeping pace with the epoch – an electronic information center has appeared there lately and the readers have access to the documents from Moscow libraries, materials and articles which are difficult to get in bookshops. Major companies of Udmurtia help to replenish electronic archive of the library.
The Director of the National Library, Galina Kalinina says that “Belkamneft” company presented them “Oil and Gas” library, which is in great demand with the students of Oil department of the University, future employees of the plant. So the national Library and oilmen have common interests and keep partner relations.
Among those who came to congratulate the librarians on the event of the jubilee were the Mayor of Izhevsk Viktor Balakin, representatives of ministries and institutions, directors of plants and enterprises, writers and journalists. Many of them some time ago also studied in comfortable halls with green-shaded lamps.
The employees of the library were awarded with certificates of honor, letters of gratitude, lapel badges and, of course a lot of kind and emotional word were said to their address.

The oldest book in the library is 400 years old. It is “Collection of Liturgical Texts” published in 1613.
7 000 rare books are kept in the library.
